As Taxing Rates Fall, Revenues Rise for Many Pitkin County Districts, ADN

Most of the largest special districts in Pitkin County are going to bring in more tax money from Pitkin County property owners in 2010 than they did in 2009, whether they have lower mill levies or not (see chart, page 5).For example, the Aspen School District will collect $26.3 million, up from $23.8 million, despite its mill levy, or taxing rate, dropping because of a state law related to school financing. The same state law lowered the mill levy of the Roaring Fork School District, which will still collect $9.7 million next year from Pitkin County property owners, up from $7.6 million last year. And the Pitkin County open space and trails program will bring in $12.2 million, up from $10.4 million last year, despite its mill levy being lowered by the Pitkin County commissioners. The increase in property tax revenues for districts with lower mill levies stems from two factors.
