Pitkin County Approves $17M for New Droste Mountain Park, ADN

ASPEN REAL ESTATE - Pitkin County commissioners enthusiastically passed an emergency ordinance Monday to spend $17 million to buy 841 acres of undeveloped land from Peter Droste and his family.George Newman, chair of the board of county commissioners, expects to sign closing documents on the open-space deal with Droste Wednesday afternoon.The Droste property forms a two-mile long ridge between the Owl Creek and Brush Creek valleys. Covered in scrub oak and sage, it’s a key elk migration corridor each spring and fall, and could soon also be a scenic summer trail network connecting Aspen and Snowmass Village.“I do believe this is a capstone acquisition for our open space and trails program,” Newman said.
