Firm Seeks Historic (HPC) Approval for New Restaurant in Mining Cabin, ADN

“The existing structures at 302 E. Hopkins Ave. are a beautiful example of Gothic revival architecture [that] significantly contribute to the history and character of Aspen,” the application says. “The applicant’s development proposal seeks to preserve the essential character of the structures …” The preservation commission in 2001 approved a larger development proposal for the site, which is next door to the building housing the Aspen Brewing Co.’s taproom. That plan never came to fruition, and vested rights granted then have expired.

ASPEN REAL ESTATE - A proposal from a California company that wants to open a restaurant in one of Aspen’s oldest structures will go before the Historic Preservation Committee on Wednesday. The Hillstone Restaurant Group of Beverly Hills is buying the A.G. Sheppard house at the corner of Hopkins Avenue and Monarch Street from Brooke Peterson, an Aspen attorney and municipal judge. The home, now used as office space by Peterson’s MJC Properties, was built in 1883 as a miner’s cabin and is considered a historic landmark, according to the development application. It sits on the “restaurant row” section of Hopkins Avenue that is home to Aspen’s highest concentration of eateries.
