Massive Rock Slide Closes Glenwood Canyon Interstate 70 Indefinitely, AT

ASPEN, CO  — Work is expected to continue Tuesday on the area above Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon where massive  boulders fell around midnight Sunday, closing the highway.More than 70 tons of rocks and debris broke loose from the canyon walls, smashing onto the highway near the Hanging Lake exit.Colorado Department of Transportation geologists assessed the fall area Monday, checking for unstable rocks to determine the potential for additional slides, according to Program Engineer Joe Elsen. CDOT reported that no lanes of I-70 would reopen until rock-fall mitigation is complete.“There is still more rock up there that is most likely going to be scaled,” Elsen said.Geologists assessed one particular rock and deemed it unstable Monday afternoon, according to a CDOT.There was no word when traffic will be allowed through Glenwood Canyon in either direction.

03/09/10 Aspen Daily News, "Just after midnight on Monday morning, a large rockslide fell onto I-70 in Glenwood Canyon near mile marker 25, causing severe road damage and closing the interstate in both directions. The Colorado Department of Transportation has been blasting and cleaning up an estimated 20 boulders that range from 3 to 10 feet in diameter. As of press time Monday, CDOT did not know when the road could reopen"
