The Goethe Bicentennial Convocation and Music Festival was held in Aspen for almost three weeks starting on June 27, 1949. With humanist Albert Schweitzer as it’s world renowned guest, the event put Aspen on the international map. It was Schwietzer’s first ever visit to the United States and it was a headlining international event covered by the world press. From this event sprang the Aspen Music Festival and School and the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies. This week, Aspenites and officials at the two organizations are preparing to mark the 60th anniversary of the Goethe (pronounced GU-tuh) event with a concert on Thursday evening and a “community party” on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Benedict Music Tent.
