As of May 28th, the number of building permits for building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and other construction related work has increased 13% for the year over the same period last year. The dollar value of permits at $88.9M is up 16% over last year. The construction numbers so far are the highest recorded since 2008 when the City of Aspen issued 668 permits valued at $200.1M for the same time period. (In 2011, the construction valuation numbers were higher but inflated by the $52M Aspen Valley Hospital expansion project). With the increase in activity, the Building and Community Development Departments are starting to get backlogged, an important consideration when scheduling a residential or commercial construction project.
