DOWNTOWN ASPEN REAL ESTATE _ Changes to the Bidwell Building redevelopment proposal got a mostly favorable reception at Monday’s meeting. The Bidwell Investment Corporation of Atlanta, made up of the children of the building’s original developer, is proposing to tear down the structure at the corner of Cooper Avenue and Galena Street in downtown Aspen and replace it with a larger new building with commercial space, affordable housing and free-market condos. The most recent changes to the proposal include eliminating the second subgrade level, which was originally planned to be a parking garage. Eliminating the sub-basement will cut at least three months off the construction time, said planning consultant Mitch Haas. The impact of a long construction period on a prominent downtown street corner has galvanized opposition to the project.
