ASPEN — Tourist-oriented sectors of Aspen’s retail economy continued to struggle in July — as did almost everything else — as overall sales posted a 17 percent drop from the same month a year ago, according to figures released this week by the city finance office.July retail sales totaled $43.4 million, and total sales for the year through July stood at $266.6 million — an 18 percent decline from the same period in 2008, according to the city report.Lodging tax collections for July were down 32 percent from the same month in 2008, and down 27 percent for the year, the report said.
