Aspen and Pitkin County –  Sales tax collections for May were down 10 percent in the city of Aspen, which continued to feel the pains of the national recession. Year to date, collections are 19 percent below where they were last year, according to a city report, with tourist-oriented sales, which make up 50 percent of all collections, suffering big blows…Aspen’s portion of Pitkin County’s sales tax for April 2009, which are a month behind other collection statistics because they are processed by the state of Colorado, were down 23 percent from ’08. Year to date, Wheeler and housing real estate transfer tax (RETT) collections through June 2009 were 5 percent behind collections for the same period in 2008 due largely to Residences at Little Nell fractional closings, even though local real estate sales continue to slump dramatically.
