Expansion plan approved by 3-1 vote

ASPEN REAL ESTATE — Michael Fox breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday afternoon as the Aspen City Council, by a 3-1 vote, approved his application for a massive expansion of The Aspen Club, ending a three-year battle that roiled the community.Aspen Mayor Mick Ireland was the sole dissenter, citing concern about the development’s ability to provide a number of community benefits and what he said was a lack of consequences should it fail to do so.“There just aren’t adequate assurances here,” Ireland said before the three remaining councilmen cast their affirmative votes.Steve Skadron, who had voiced skepticism about the expansion in previous hearings, said in the meeting that, with a few minor amendments, Fox’s final application was adequate. The decision was made after two-and-a-half hours of debate over a new clause the council asked Fox to insert into the application that guarantees a monetary incentive to the community.
