ASPEN REAL ESTATE – An anonymous developer who was proposing residential development as a means to preserve the Given Institute has terminated negotiations with the city of Aspen.SC Acquisitions LLC, which is under contract to buy the Given from the University of Colorado (CU), informed the city late Friday that it would no longer be participating in the Ordinance 48 negotiations process, which is a method the city uses to work with property owners to achieve historic preservation goals. The Given has been a rallying point for historic preservation interests that see the quirky modernist building as being indicative of Aspen’s identity as an intellectual oasis.According to a university spokesman, SC Acquisitions also is expected to terminate its contract with CU, which has owned and operated the Given since its opening in 1973 as a center for medical research conferences. The university’s School of Medicine, which has administered the facility for the last 20 years, was looking to what would have been a $13.8 million transaction on the 2.25-acre West End property to help make up for declining state funding over the last 10 years.
