The Aspen Art Museum has been looking for years to move downtown from its current location in a city-owned building across the Roaring Fork River from Rio Grande Park. Voters in May 2009 shot down a plan for the art museum to purchase the city-owned Youth Center site near the library and courthouse, at which point the museum began pursuing privately held parcels. If the museum moves, the city gets the historic building back.

ASPEN REAL ESTATE – Aspen City Council got its first official look at the new Aspen Art Museum proposal at Monday night’s council meeting, three weeks before two special meetings are scheduled that could decide the land-use application that would settle a developer-versus-city lawsuit.A new downtown Aspen Art Museum has been offered in negotiations between owners of the Wienerstube property, who sued Aspen City Council after a redevelopment application for the site was denied. The settlement proposal was made public last Thursday. Monday was the first reading of the settlement approval ordinance.
