ASPEN REAL ESTATE — On Monday night, there was a public hearing on an amendment to the historic designation of the Crandall building, located at 630 E. Hyman Ave. and home to Aspen Valley Pediatrics, Sandy’s Office Supply, the Aspen Barber Shop and other businesses. The city approved a remodel of the building in December 2009, securing affordable commercial spaces for a dozen businesses and historically designating a significant downtown property. (The building was designed by the late Tom Benton.) As part of the remodel, the city approved the addition of a penthouse. It further required that much of the building’s character remain intact, including the iconic round window with views to Aspen Mountain that is currently part of the building’s public space. But the amendment before council Monday asked to have that space be converted to commercial use, with the window intact but not accessible to the public. The building’s owner, Greg Hills, told the council he needed to make the change to keep the project affordable for locals like Mitchell.
