Garfield County was one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation last year, and Pitkin County, despite its reputation for growth control, was one of the fastest in the state, according to census estimates released on Thursday.Garfield County’s once-booming natural gas industry fueled its boom, demographers said, as workers flocked there in search of jobs… Pitkin County, like other resort counties, can likely attribute its boom to second-home owners settling down and making their vacation homes their year-round homes. It was the state’s eighth fastest-growing county. Eagle County ranked ninth, driven by similar forces. The numbers don’t reflect more recent changing realities as the recession impacts the economy not only of the nation but of mountain towns. The estimates track population changes from July 2007 to July 2008.
