ASPEN REAL ESTATE – A proposal to save the Given Institute by surrounding it with spec homes has some concerned about impacts on the adjacent Hallam Lake Nature Preserve. The University of Colorado, which has operated the Given Institute as a conference center dedicated to symposiums on medical research since 1973, is looking to sell the 2.25-acre property, located in the West End on a bluff above Hallam Lake and the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES). A prospective buyer has come forward with a proposal that would preserve the Given building — which other potential buyers would have torn down — but would subdivide the property into four total lots creating sites for three new 5,000-square-foot homes. The city’s planning and zoning and historic preservation commissions are set to review the proposal in January before making a recommendation to City Council.
