ASPEN REAL ESTATE – A partnership that owns a new downtown Aspen building containing two restaurants is facing about $960,000 in overdue debt to local subcontractors, according to public documents. As of Friday afternoon, 10 subcontractors who had worked on the new La Cocina building at 308 East Hopkins Ave. had filed liens against JW Ventures, a five-person partnership that includes local investor John Provine, restaurateur Walt Harris and architect Charles Cunniffe.Harris runs the two restaurants in what’s still known as the La Cocina building (for the restaurant that was formerly in that location). The new Ute City bar and grill operates on the street level, and Syzygy, a longtime local eatery, relocated to the basement of the 20,000-square-foot building. Both restaurants opened for this winter season.
