The open space purchase would get rid of four rights to build homes on the undeveloped land. It also could provide new trail access to 14,000 acres of federal land located within Pitkin County, on the Crown. It also borders the Rio Grande Trail, and would protect the adjacent area from residential development. The parcel of land is likewise visible from Highway 82 between Blue Lake and the Emma town site, making home development there a threat to scenic views from the road.
APEN PITKIN COUNTY REAL ESTATE – The Pitkin County commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to spend $1.86 million to buy a 145-acre parcel of land in Eagle County. The county is partnering with Eagle County and the town of Basalt for the $5 million total purchase from the Saltonstall family. Eagle County is expected to pay about $2 million in the deal, in addition to an applied-for $600,000 Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) lottery funds grant, a $500,000 contribution from Basalt and a $50,000 donation from the Mid-Valley Trails Committee. If the governments can’t raise the total sum by July 2, they can back out of the purchase.
