Robert S. McNamara, who died Monday in Washington at age 93, considered the mountains around Aspen and Snowmass Village his sanctuary and his playground.A long time owner of a ski-in/ski-out Snowmass home, a passionate downhill and backcountry skier, McNamara, and his wife Margy who died in 1981, are the namesakes for the first two huts built for the Tenth Mountain Division Hut Association near Aspen. The huts were built in 1982 with funds from McNamara, who served as president of the World Bank from 1968 to 1981.McNamara wrote that he had been a supporter of the Aspen Music Festival and School since it started 60 years ago. He was also a “lifetime trustee” of the Aspen Institute and was given the Institute’s Public Service Award in 1989.
