By the end of the month a bookstore in Basalt and a luggage store in Aspen will be gone, victims of changes in the economy and the buying habits of their customers. Town Center Booksellers on Midland Avenue in Basalt will close on March 29 after operating for four-and-a-half years, according to general manager Fred Durham.“The average profit margin for books is about 2 percent and that doesn’t leave you a lot of room once you get into the red,” Durham said.

Recession, trends will force Town Center Booksellers to close

BASALT, Co – Dick Merritt visited Town Center Booksellers in Basalt on Monday afternoon to look for book on Teddy Roosevelt. He left with a broken heart instead. Merritt, one of the most loyal customers of the 4 1/2-year-old store that anchors Basalt’s Midland Avenue, was told by general manager Fred Durham that the store will close at the end of the month.
